Types and Models of Electric Strikes

Electric strikes are available in several distinct formats, each suited to different door types, frame geometries, and security applications. Understanding the differences between types is essential for correct product selection.

ANSI mortice electric strikes — including the Alpro AL110, AL111, AL112, EL900, and AL2000 — use short and long face plates to suit metal and timber door frames respectively. The compact body design of ANSI strikes fits within a standard mortice pocket in the door frame, leaving the faceplate flush with the frame face. A low profile version is available for applications where standard body depth cannot be accommodated. A deep jaw format provides additional keeper depth for doors with significant pre-load or where door preload causes latch engagement issues.

Surface mounted electric strikes sit on the face of the door frame rather than within a mortice pocket, making them suitable for retrofit and for frames where cutting a mortice is not possible. Surface mounted electric strike formats are available in both fail safe and fail secure configurations.

Pre-load electric strikes are designed for doors with significant pre-load — where the door presses against the frame under wind load or spring pressure. A pre-load electric strike incorporates a mechanism that resists the latch being pushed back by door preload, maintaining a secure latch engagement until the strike is energised.

Field selectable voltage input is a key feature of the Alpro range — the AL110, EL900, and AL2000 all accept 12/24V AC/DC, with the voltage selected at installation using jumper links or wiring configuration. This field selectable voltage input removes the need for a separate transformer or relay module in most access control system installations. High security applications requiring continuous current monitoring, dual monitoring of latch status, and integration with access control kits should specify a monitored electric strike such as the Alpro EL900-IK or AL2000. Extension lip variants — including the 25mm extension lip supplied as standard with the EL900 and the 50mm extension lip available separately — allow the same strike body to be used across different frame thickness configurations.

Fail Safe vs. Fail Secure Modes

Every electric strike in the Pivox range operates in one of two fundamental modes: fail safe or fail secure. Understanding the difference is essential for specifying the correct product and for meeting fire egress and security requirements.

Fail safe configuration — also referred to as fail open or PTL (power to lock) — means the electric strike holds the door locked only when power is applied. In the event of a power failure, the strike releases and the door can be opened freely, ensuring safe egress. Fail safe electric strikes are the correct choice for fire doors, emergency exits, and any door on an escape route where safe egress must be maintained regardless of power status. Fail safe configuration is a building regulation requirement on designated escape routes in commercial premises.

Fail secure setup — also referred to as fail locked or PTO (power to open) — means the electric strike remains locked when power is removed. Fail secure setup prevents a power failure from creating an open door condition, maintaining security in the event of mains loss. A forced entry attempt cannot release the door without an active signal from the access control system. The right hand Schuco electric strike is fail secure as standard. Fail secure setup is specified for high security applications, server rooms, secure storage, and any door where unauthorised access must be prevented during a power failure.

Field selectable fail mode is available on the Alpro AL110, EL900, and AL2000 series. The field selectable function allows the installer to configure the strike as either fail safe or fail secure on site by reversing the latch bolt orientation, following the installation instructions supplied with the unit. The AL111 is factory set fail secure and the AL112 is factory set fail safe for applications where field selectable adjustment is not required. Current draw remains the same regardless of fail mode selection. Security requirements and fire egress regulations should both be considered before selecting the fail mode — on fire doors, fail safe configuration is typically mandatory to ensure safe egress. The latch bolt throw and latch bolt orientation must be confirmed against the door latch specification before installation to ensure correct engagement with the electric strike keeper.

Integration with Access Control Systems

Electric strikes integrate directly with access control systems via standard wiring to relays, timeclocks, exit devices, and credential readers including keypads, card readers, and biometric readers. The latch alignment between the door latch bolt and the electric strike keeper is critical to reliable operation — incorrect latch alignment is the most common cause of strike failure in service. PCBs within monitored electric strikes provide locking devices and door snib status outputs to access control kits and alarm panels. Electric locking via an electric strike allows manual handles and mechanical keys to remain operational on the secure side, preserving egress without the need for additional exit devices. Interlocks, timeclocks, and relays can be used to manage access schedules, with continuous current draw monitored by the access control platform for fault detection. Door snib function and electric locking can be combined for installations requiring both manual override and electronic control.

Key Features and Specifications

Electric strikes are specified primarily by faceplate format, voltage, fail mode, and fire rating. The key specification points for the Pivox range are as follows.

Faceplate: ANSI strikes use either a dimensions long faceplate for timber doors or a dimensions short faceplate for aluminium and metal doors. The Schuco electric strike uses a dedicated U-shaped stainless steel faceplate sized to the Schuco ADS profile. Modular faceplate designs within the Alpro range allow the same strike body to accept different faceplate formats. A low profile version is available for narrow frame applications where standard faceplate depth cannot be accommodated.

Voltage: All Alpro strikes accept 12/24V AC/DC field selectable voltage input. Current draw at 12V DC is 300mA for the EL900 and lower for the AL110 series. A regulated DC power supply unit is recommended for silent operation — AC operation produces an audible buzz from the solenoid. Power supply units with high efficiency ratings reduce ongoing running costs across multi-door installations. Continuous current draw should be factored into power supply unit sizing for installations with multiple electric strikes on the same circuit.

Fire rating: Fire rated electric strike models are available for FD30 and FD60 fire rated doors. Fire rated applications require a fire rated electric strike tested and certified to BS EN 1634-1. Installations on FD30 doors, FD60 doors, and fire rated door sets must use a fire rated electric strike with the appropriate intumescent pack where required by the door manufacturer. ANSI strikes and rim strikes are both available in fire rated configurations for emergency doors and fire door applications.

Fail safe/fail secure: Field selectable lock mode on the Alpro range allows the same product to be configured for either fail safe configuration or fail secure setup on site, without returning to the supplier. The latch bolt throw is reversed by a simple field adjustment following the installation instructions supplied with each unit. Holding force is maintained regardless of fail mode selection.

Applications for Specific Door Types

Electric strikes are used across a wide range of door types and access control applications. The right hand Schuco electric strike and left hand Schuco electric strike are specific to Schuco ADS aluminium door systems. The Alpro ANSI electric strike AL110 and EL900 series cover aluminium doors, timber doors, metal door applications, and some composite door types. Rim strikes including the Alpro AL150 are designed for surface mounted electric strikes on timber doors using rim latches. Glass door strike formats are available for frameless glass door installations. Surface mounted electric strikes suit applications where morticing is not possible. Monitored electric strike configurations suit FD30 doors, FD60 doors, emergency doors, and fire rated doors where latch status monitoring is a specification requirement. ANSI strikes suit standard morticed latch installations on timber and metal door frames. Panic bars and panic hardware on emergency doors can be integrated with electric strikes for controlled release. Timber doors in residential and light commercial applications are the most common application for rim strikes.

Accessories and Complementary Products

A full range of accessories is stocked alongside the electric strike range. Extension lips are available in 25mm and 50mm lengths — a 25mm extension lip is supplied as standard with the EL900 series, and a 50mm extension lip is available separately for deeper frame applications. Intumescent packs are available for fire rated electric strike installations where the door manufacturer specifies intumescent material around the strike housing. Batteries and battery backup power supply units maintain electric strike operation during mains power failure in fail secure installations. An intumescent kit completes fire door installations where the strike body penetrates the door frame. Power supply units sized to the current draw of the installed strikes are available, with the RGL access control power supply unit recommended for Alpro installations.
